Background
Zoe was born on March 7, 1877 to a very poor family in Moscow, Russia. She had very little growing up and her early childhood was wrought with suffering and hunger. When she was three, her family could not afford to keep Zoe anymore and her mother sent her to the insane asylum outside of town claiming she had violent outbreaks and was not mentally all there. Because of this, Zoe was placed under heavy sedation and kept locked in a padded room all day, left alone with her sobs and cries for her mother who had abandoned her. She never spoke to anyone except for the doctors who came to check on her and a single patient who would be allowed to clean the hallway outside her room. She would open the window to her door and speak with her, reassuring her that everything would be alright and she would go home soon. Zoe soon learned that her name was Rachel and that she was also a patient in the asylum and soon started to look at her as a mother figure.
When Zoe turned nine, one of the doctors came into her room, saying they were going to take her to see her mother. The doctor led her down the corridor and into a large room where she was grabbed by two other doctors and placed on a table. They strapped her down to the table and the one who took her to the room picked up a bone saw and he started to saw away at Zoe’s forehead. As she screamed out in pain, the door busted open and Rachel attacked the doctors. The next thing that Zoe knew she was being carried from the asylum by Rachel. Delirious from blood loss, Zoe passed out. When she awake, it was dark and Rachel was over her. She explained what had happened and what she was, Zoe couldn’t believe it. Voices poured into her mind and she felt as if she was going mad. She then lost consciousness once again as a new personality was created to deal with the news and her new life. She called herself Rebekah.
As time passed, Rachel took the place of Zoe’s mother and the pair masqueraded as mother and daughter. With Zoe’s new personality, she has never remembered what she is or even knows of Rebekah, who fully understands that she is Kindred and the one who Rachel has taught the ways of the vampires. She allows Zoe to maintain her child-like innocence. The pair traveled Europe, moving from London to Paris and they soon found themselves in the Americas at the turn of the twentieth century. They continued their charade, moving every few years when people started to question why Zoe didn’t seem to age. As the world around them changed, the pair traveled to San Francisco, ten years after the turn of the millennium to being a new life.
